Given the unprecedented decision of the state government to reduce NREGA wage in the state, JJSS members were split in whether to continue their tradition of celebrating Mazdoor Diwas on May 1st. Some said that we should not give up the one day we celebrate our existence as mazdoors, but others felt that we were in the midst of a fight and celebrations had to wait. Finally, it was decided to have the Mazdoor Diwas minus the mela. The day would be used for sharing experiences and creating awareness about the minimum wage issue.
The preparations like each year involved tempo yatras and prachars for May Day. The focus being announcement of the battle for minimum wages – “Mazdoori kee jung ka elaan!”
Thousands of workers from Araria, Katihar, Purnea and Saharsa came together on the hot day of 1st May. And in a very humane gesture Tanveer and Tauseef bhai spent the day at a free sharbat stall they put up for all saathis to quench their thirst. A new karyakarni was formed, with a warm welcome to new saathis Aitvari rishidev and Phool Kumari. The new elected President of the JJSS is Deepnarayan Paswan (Katihar) and Vice-President Krishna Kumar Singh (Araria).
